BFA’s fusion with ELTE, a high-level, ”ivy-league” University
A new chapter begun in the film study program of ELTE’s Faculty of Humanities. On August 29th, 2011 ELTE representatives Tamas Dezső, PhD (Dean) and Koloman Brenner, PhD (Vice-Dean) signed a cooperation agreement with Jenő Hódi, chairman and owner of CinePartners Entertainment.
According to this agreement, CinePartners launched filmmaking courses in Hungary under the name of Budapest Film Academy. Within a few years, these courses will cover the full spectrum of the filmmaking profession. These practical courses are taught by internationally successful professionals, and include exposure to the most modern production and post-production houses in Hungary.
Budapest Film Academy (BFA) and Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) have joined forces launched an English and Hungarian language film academy in September 2011, offering practical film studies to students who would like to become industry professionals.
The founder of BFA, Jenő Hodi, received his Masters degree in film at Columbia University, New York, under the guidance of Milos Forman and Brian De Palma. After graduation, he worked as writer, director and producer in the US and Western Europe for many years.
Budapest Film Academy offers film training with a global perspective, in line with ELTE’s academic system, accreditation and other requirements.
BFA/ELTE works closely with higher education institutions abroad, film- and post-production studios, production equipment rental companies, production offices, as well as with international and local distributors.
The academy’s faculty is ideally made up of highly qualified academic scholars and leading figures and award winners of the film industry, who lend not only their knowledge, but their networking to students. The most gifted students soar under the mentorship of foreign and local professionals with extensive professional background. The Academy also facilitates semester-long exchange programs with institutions abroad.
BFA offers additional practical classes towards ELTE’s Bachelor Degree.
In addition to the joint program of BFA and ELTE, every semester we invite one of the world-famed masters of cinema to teach a special, creative filmmaking workshop.
The above mentioned film programs and degrees:
BA in Liberal Arts with optional specialization in Film Theory and Film History
MA practical, filmmaker degree from ELTE Department of Film Studies
Creative film workshops with world-famed masters of cinema
ELTE’s curriculum of film analysis, film history, genre theory, and aesthetics is wonderfully complimented by Budapest Film Academy’s practical courses. The Academy also aims to give insight into film financing and co-productions. Our brand is to treat filmmaking as not only a form of art, but as a business.
Filmmaking is increasingly turning global. The best film schools have accepted this fact, and have learned to adapt. Graduates of Budapest Film Academy will commence their professional career with a competitive edge, in their field of specialty and in other areas of filmmaking too.
BFA/ELTE is a one-of-a-kind institution of higher education, where graduates will receive help to land jobs in film. In other words, students will not only learn how to express themselves through film, but how to make their celluloid dreams come true.
Our Pledge To Prospective Students
Filmmaking is among the most coveted professions in the world. As such, the road to success in this field is intense, competitive, and pressure-filled. However, if navigated properly, the rewards are numerous, and can provide both creative satisfaction and a great income.
This is why, each year, scores of students apply to film schools all over the world, spending thousands in tuition to pursue their dreams. The problem is that the market is saturated, with too many students and not enough filmmaking jobs to go around. From the many thousands worldwide who finish their film studies each year, precious few will forge lasting, successful careers in one of the main artistic or technical fields.
We are not trying to talk our prospective students out of their dreams. If they have the hunger to make it as filmmakers, they must hold onto it – as it will be vital to their success. While the odds of success are long, they can be overcome. But to do so, students will need to acquire a few things: knowledge of the industry, an understanding of the international market place, comprehensive filmmaking skills, practical knowledge, and last but not least, international connections. And from day one, those things are exactly what Budapest Film Academy helps our students to obtain.
Our mission is to rigorously train our students to become world-class story tellers. BFA’s curriculum includes practical creative workshops and courses that cover the entire spectrum of the filmmaking process. Students are immersed in the principles and working methods of a variety of genres and dramatic forms. Through multiple practical exercises, short films, and script projects, they are encouraged to explore their understanding of the medium, with the ultimate goal of establishing each student’s personal voice.
